Newton abbot’s local newpaper “The mid devon advertiser” came into the shop and decided to do a piece about us in the local newpaper. We also gave away one sarah charlie bear to the paper to be the prize for their childrens competition.
Charlie Bear is the new craze for collectors
MOVE over all you other teddies– Charlie Bears are the new collectable cuddly on the block.
The bears are flying off the shelves at Magpies, Newton Abbot, and the stockists are selling the bears all around the globe. ‘We’ve had orders from all around Europe and as far afield as America,’ said Carol Handley-Collins of Magpies.
The bears were recently featured on QVC shopping channel, and orders in the Newton Abbot shop went through the roof. ‘We sold 110 in one day,’ said Mrs Handley-Collins. The demand for the bears is high, as many are limited edition. ‘They only make a small amount of mohair bears, so they are in demand, and when they are hard to get hold of or are sold out, the prices rocket. ‘The plush bears are not limited, but they still only make so many and once they run out of one type of plush, again everyone tries to get hold of that particular bear.
The difference with Charlie Bears is this new cuddly won’t break the bank. ‘What’s good about Charlie Bears is that they are cheaper than alot of their competitors but just as lovely,’ said Mrs Handley-Collins. ‘They are made in the same way as many of the worlds famous bears and have the same joints and glass eyes.’
Charlie Bears was established in Holsworthy in 2005 by Charlie and William Morris. They now use artists around the world, including Isabelle Lee to help design their bears. Each bear has its own name and its own character. ‘There are about 300 in the Charlie Bear collection now and we have collectors pre-ordering the new collection before we even get the bears in stock,’ said Mrs Handley-Collins. ‘Only 100 worldwide were made of the bear Chocolate Muffin, and only 40 were made of Dion. These are popular bears at the moment. ‘Dion’s brother, Simba, comes out in the new collection and we think he will be very popular. ‘The bear Tutti Frutti from the new collection is already sold out and we haven’t even had our stock come in yet. ‘People come to us as we are the largest stockist in the south west.’ Due to the bears being reasonably priced they are collected by both adults and children. ‘There is the Charlie Bears Best Friend Club which attracts a lot of collectors, young and old,’ said Mrs Handley- Collins. ‘When collectors can’t get to our store they buy from our web site. This time last year I couldn’t even use a computer, now I have to because these bears are taking the world by storm,’ said Mrs Handley-Collins. Find out more at www.charliebearsuk.
